The Construction team at South West College recently hosted a special taster event to showcase the Level 3 BTEC Construction and The Built Environment and Civil Engineering programmes to students from local schools in the Dungannon area.

The Level 3 programmes at the College offer full-time, part-time and A-Level equivalent study options, or a student can attend the college to complete it as an A-Level while studying 2 A-Levels at school, allowing young people to choose the option that suits them best.

During the event, attendees from various Dungannon schools had the opportunity to experience industry-standard software, create their own designs, and gain practical experience using digital surveying equipment.

Current Level 3 students at South West College also shared their own experiences of the programme, while level 6 Construction students explained why they chose to study locally while completing a Higher Level Apprenticeship (HLA).

Unlike University courses, HLAs are accredited work-based programmes ranging from Level 4 to Level 7. They combine invaluable classroom learning with practical workplace training to prepare students for highly skilled jobs. Following a level 3 programme HLAs provide the ideal employment pathway option and are available within SWC across various sectors including Construction, Civil Engineering, Engineering, Business, Accounting and Computing.

Vanessa O Keefe, Interim Head of School - Natural and Built Environment, said:

“South West College is excited to provide young people with the opportunity to experience the exciting and dynamic world of construction through these taster sessions. With sustained growth driving the construction sector, individuals looking to build a rewarding career have a unique opportunity to study Construction or Civil Engineering at level 3.

South West College offers an extensive range of professional and technical qualifications, from Level 3 to a Level 6 Top Up degree, tailored to equip young learners with the expertise and proficiency required to excel in this dynamic and competitive industry. As the cost of traditional university education surges, ambitious individuals seeking to progress their careers should embrace alternative pathways and make well-informed choices."
