Overview

This course is designed to prepare you for a career in Construction Engineering and Surveying - building, land and quantity surveying, through gaining cutting edge technical skills and knowledge necessary for the modern Construction Industry. It will provide you with specific practical and professional skills, analysis, organisation, design, teamwork and communications. The course aims to leave you equally prepared to progress to complete your Honours Degree, to directly enter employment as a highly skilled employee, or to start your own business. Skills Focus funding available towards course fees for eligible employers to up skill staff or for self employed students. Please ask for further details.

This Foundation Degree offers a wide range of modules including Law, CAD, Site Management and Surveying. These modules equip students for careers in site engineering, project management, site surveying and Architectural Design. This Foundation Degree gives students a broad insight into many job roles within the Construction industry.

Year One

If you choose to study part-time these modules are delivered over three years, (two semester per year). All modules are mandatory.

  • Entry requirements: 64 UCAS tariff points (equivalent to A level grades CC) for the full-time programme, and 56 UCAS tariff points (equivalent to A level grades CD) for the part-time and accelerated part-time programmes; GSCE English and Maths at Grade C or approved equivalent.
  • In addition, applicants must hold an A Level pass in one of the following subject areas: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Biology, Geography, Applied Science or DA Science, Life and Health Science (single or double award), Technology (including Technology & Design, Design & Technology, Environmental Technology and Digital Technology). Alternative qualifications such as BTEC National awards in STEM subjects are also acceptable.

Course International Entry Requirements:

Any applicant whose first language is not English or who has not achieved a grade C in a recent GCSE in English Language should demonstrate their competence in written and spoken English at IELTS – Academic 6.0, with minimum 5.5 in all four elements of the test.

Where an applicant does not hold the formal academic requirements for entry to the programme but can demonstrate relevant experiential learning across a range of industries, they may apply for admission through the College Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) process. In such cases, contact the Course Director for the programme who will advise further.

Assessment will be carried out via a variety of assessment methods. These will include: coursework assignments and end of module examinations as well as group activities and professional presentations. You will also be assessed in the workplace as part of your industrial placement.

On successful completion of this course and subject to performance, students who achieve the required entry criteria may apply to the following South West College Top Up course (1 year full time, 2 year part time)

BSc (Hons) Construction Engineering and Management (validated by The Open University).

or students can apply for entry to Year 2 of the following Ulster University Honours degree programmes:

BSc Hons Construction Engineering & Management (full time or part time)

BSc Hons Building Surveying


The course modules form a broad basis for Construction Engineering. Modules include CADD, BIM basics, measurement, law, project management and surveying. These modules will be enhanced by supplementary modules in mathematics, materials and comfort. A Group project will form an integral part of the assessment, where students will take a chosen project from inception through to completion.

£4,710 full time

£310 per 20 credit module

£620 for 40-credit Work Based Learning Module

International Student fees £9,500 p.a.

Other fees associated with the course:

During your course you may be required to purchase course textbooks and incur additional costs for printing, photocopying and binding. The overall costs incurred to support your studies may be in the region of £250 per year.
