South West College (SWC) is proud to celebrate the achievements of graduate Tomasia da Costa Ximenes, from Dungannon whose educational journey highlights the value of exploring interests, embracing change, and progressing with confidence.

Tomasia began her studies at South West College in 2019 after completing her GCSEs. Unsure of her long-term career direction at the time, she was drawn to SWC for its supportive learning environment and opportunities to discover the right pathway.

“I chose to study at South West College because it provided a supportive environment where I could explore my interests and discover the right career pathway for me,”

She initially enrolled on a Level 3 Graphic Design course at the Dungannon Campus, successfully completing her first year before realising her passions lay elsewhere. With the encouragement and guidance of college staff, Tomasia reassessed her goals and transitioned to Level 2 Travel and Tourism, also at the Dungannon Campus, a decision that proved to be a turning point.

Having found a pathway aligned with her interests and career ambitions, Tomasia progressed through Level 3 Travel and Tourism before completing the Ulster University Foundation Degree in Science in Tourism, Hospitality and Events Management (Tourism specialism) at the Enniskillen Campus. She is currently completing her final year of the International Tourism Management BSc (Hons) at Ulster University, Coleraine.

One of Tomasia’s proudest achievements was receiving The Natalia Benicka Memorial Award following her completion of the Level 3 NCFE Travel and Tourism course. The award recognised her dedication, commitment, and academic excellence, further reinforcing her passion for the tourism industry.

Throughout her studies, Tomasia successfully overcame a number of challenges, including studying in a second language and adapting to different academic levels and campuses. She credits her success to perseverance, effective time management, and the consistent support of her lecturers.

“Studying in a second language required extra effort, particularly in developing academic writing and confidence,” she explained. “The encouragement and guidance from lecturers helped me build resilience and adapt to new challenges.”

Now a full-time university student, Tomasia has developed a strong interest in management, finance, and accounting, and hopes to pursue a career in these areas. She cites her parents as her greatest inspiration, motivating her to work hard and strive for success.

Reflecting on her time at South West College, Tomasia highlighted its lasting impact on her academic and personal development:

“My time at South West College has not only helped me academically but also personally, by building my confidence, resilience, and adaptability. I am committed to continuing my learning journey and making the most of the opportunities ahead in my career and studies.”

Tomasia strongly recommends South West College to prospective students, describing it as a welcoming and inclusive environment where learners are encouraged to explore their interests and progress with confidence.

South West College congratulates Tomasia on her achievements and wishes her every success as she completes her degree and embarks on the next stage of her career.
