Pearson Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Civil Engineering (Apprenticeship)

Overview

The aim of this course is to build upon the interest learners may already have in the field of civil engineering, to develop their skills, deepen their understanding, and prepare them either to progress to Higher Education in the field and advance within their current employment. The practical nature of the course helps develop the learner's expertise in the area of civil engineering through hands-on experience, case studies, and projects. Learners will develop skills, knowledge and understanding using the latest industry-standard software and technologies.

An apprentice is a student employed as full-time member of staff working for a company three to four days a week. One day each week is spent at college, studying a level 3 Pearson BTEC National Diploma and Pearson level 3 Diploma in Civil Engineering for technicians (Institute of Civil Engineers).

  • You must be a new employee, or an existing employee taking on a new role to take part in the programme. Be employed by a company that has a base in Northern Ireland and is registered as an employer with HMRC, and be contracted to work a minimum of 21 hours per week with one employer.
  • Individual employers may also apply their own criteria at the recruitment stage.
  • The student is employed all year round but college classes run from September to end of June.
  • Employers pay for the day the apprentice is in college and is required to pay a minimum full-time wage in accordance with the national minimum apprentice wage.
  • To successfully complete the apprenticeship, you must achieve the following essential skills qualifications as part of the apprenticeship, or already hold a recognised equivalent:

Application of Number – Level 2

Communication – Level 2

Information and Communication Technology – Level 2

Apprentices must be employed in a Civil Engineering role.

Details and restrictions

  • Apprentices must be aged 16 to 25.
  • Employers must be based in Northern Ireland.

The course is suitable for students wishing to progress to a Foundation Degree in Civil Engineering or other construction related Foundation Degree at SWC, including Higher Level Apprenticeship in Construction Engineering with Surveying.

The student experience will be enhanced by visits to construction sites helping to contextualise the learning. Guest speakers from disciplines across the industry also regularly deliver lectures on specialised topics.

You must be a new employee, or an existing employee taking on a new role to take part in the programme.

Entry to the level 3 apprenticeship is by progression from the apprenticeshipsni level 2 framework in construction or a related occupation. Employers may also apply their own criteria at the recruitment stage.

You may also enter the level 3 apprenticeship, subject to assessment by the training contractor and employer, if you:

  • have already gained significant work experience in your occupational area, which could be considered as meeting the requirements of a level 2 apprenticeship and can show the capacity to achieve a level 3 standard
  • have previously achieved a relevant level 2 recognised vocational qualification in a related area

To successfully complete the apprenticeship, you must achieve the following essential skills qualifications as part of the apprenticeship, or already hold a recognised equivalent:

  • application of number – level 2
  • communication – level 2
  • information and communication technology – level 2

However, any qualifications you already have are assessed against the framework requirements and may result in an exemption from the above.

Three of the units are externally assessed: Construction Principles (examination), Construction Design (set tasks) and Tendering and Estimating (set tasks). All other units are internally assessed by projects and coursework assignments.

Upon successful completion, learners may progress to a range of Higher Education courses such as a Foundation Degree in Engineering in Civil Engineering validated by Ulster University or Foundation Degree in Construction Engineering with Surveying validated by Ulster University and many other related programmes. It is also possible to progress directly into employment, or in some cases to self-employment, using the skills learned. If in existing employment then opportunities for promotion may present themselves.
