Supporting Your Child Through Results Season: Practical Advice for Parents and Carers

August can be a time of excitement, pride—and uncertainty—for families across Northern Ireland as young people receive their A Level, vocational qualification, or GCSE results. Whether the outcome brings celebration or concern, parents and guardians play a key role in helping students navigate their next steps with confidence and understanding.

South West College, with campuses in Omagh, Enniskillen, and Dungannon, is once again offering reassurance, guidance, and a clear way forward for families during this milestone period.

Padraig McNamee, Curriculum Director of South West College, acknowledges the stress and challenges results season can bring:

Our message to parents is simple: don’t panic. We’re ready to welcome your child, listen to their ambitions, provide them with impartial advice, and guide them toward a successful and fulfilling future.”

As both a member of college staff and parent of a student, Colette Fox McCallan reflected upon her son’s time at the college, saying: “Enrolling in the barbering course was the best decision he ever made. From day one the supportive tutors inspired his confidence and creativity. He looked forward to every class. The hands-on training and professional environment prepared him for real-world success. Now he’s thriving in his career, and it all started at the college.”

To help students and families explore their options in person, South West College is holding Registration Days this August (14/15 A Level Results, 21/22 GCSE Results) at campuses in Omagh, Enniskillen, and Dungannon. These events provide an ideal opportunity to speak to staff, get tailored advice on courses and progression routes, and complete the registration process for the new academic year.
