Overview

South West College is please to offer a suite of Electric/Hybrid courses delivered across the academic year. Students may enter this exciting sector beginning with IMI Level 2 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Routine Maintenance Activities.

This Level 3 course is for students that have completed the IMI Level 2 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Maintenance Activities course. On completion of this Level 3 course students may progress onto IMI Level 4 Award in the Diagnosis, Testing and Repair of Electric/Hybrid Vehicles and Components.

Each level is completed in 6 calendar weeks. It is possible to complete all 3 courses within an academic year beginning in September 2025 and completing in March 2026. Please check the website links for each course start date.

This qualification helps provide entry into employment within the retail motor industry. This qualification is part of an apprenticeship in auto electrical and mobile electrical. This qualification also provides a high level of underpinning knowledge and skills which may allow progression onto some higher education qualifications in automotive and engineering related subjects.

This qualification supports young people to acquire transferable skills required to work within a range of job roles with both the retail motor industry and other sectors, as well as acquire advanced level specialist technical practical skills across the range of systems and components on modern auto electrical and mobile electrical systems to support progression into employment.

  • Auto Electrical and Aftermarket Enhancement
  • Inspecting Vehicles Using Prescribed Methods
  • Diagnosis and Rectification of Engine Electrical Faults
  • Diagnosis and Rectification of Transmission and Chassis Electrical Faults
  • Auxiliary Locks and Security Devices (Electrical & Mechanical)
  • Suitability, Installation and Configuration of Vehicle Electrical Enhancements and Electrical Security
  • Conducting Vehicle Enhancement and Installation
  • Consultations with Customers in the Motor Vehicle Environment

The assessment is made up of three components:

  • practical tasks
  • online testing
  • written assignment (coursework)

This qualification has a choice of two job routes; auto electrical technician or auto electrical aftermarket enhancement technician.

This provides the pre-requisite qualification that enables entry into Associate Membership of the Institute of the Motor Industry Professional Body (AMIMI). Students can also progress onto the IMI Level 4 Award in the Diagnosis, Testing and Repair of Electric/Hybrid Vehicles and Components

Successful completion of this course is equivalent to 48 UCAS points.
