Overview

This qualification is a work related, competence based qualification. It reflects the skills and knowledge needed to do a job effectively, and shows that a learner is competent in the area of work the qualification represents. Learners will have access to state of the art machinery and equipment which will enable them to work in the Land Based Engineering industry.

A choice of specialism is available on the Apprenticeship programme:

Agriculture Machinery

You will be able to remove and replace parts and components from tractors and machinery. You will also be able to service tractors and machinery.

Construction Plant Machinery

You will be able to remove and replace parts and components from plant machinery. You will also be able to service diggers and dumper trucks.

Year One

  • Unit 201: Monitor and maintain health and safety in a land based engineering work area
  • Unit 202: Land based engineering operations –applying mechanical principles
  • Unit 203: Understand how to use, service tools and equipment
  • Unit 204: Land based engineering operations-material preparation, shaping and assembling
  • Unit 205: Carry out servicing and maintenance on land based equipment
  • Unit 206: Land based engineering operations- perform thermal joining and cutting processes
  • Unit 207: Service and repair Cooling and Lubrication systems
  • Unit 219: Service and repair electrical equipment on land based equipment
  • Unit 220: Service and repair hydraulic systems and components on land based equipment
  • Unit 221: Maintain and develop personal performance
  • Unit 222: Establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Service and repair engines and components (Agriculture/Construction Plant Maintenance)
  • Service and repair braking systems on land based equipment (Agriculture)
  • Service and repair wheeled and tracked steering systems on land based equipment (Agriculture)
  • Service and repair land based cutting and mowing equipment (Agriculture)
  • Service and repair pneumatic systems and components for land based equipment (Agriculture)
  • Operating plant or machinery for non-operational activities in the work place (Construction Plant Maintenance)
  • Service and repair earth moving equipment and material handling equipment (Construction Plant Maintenance)

GCSE Maths at Grade D or above and GCSE English at Grade E or above.

The units will be assessed via work-based evidence in a portfolio. The authenticity, sufficiency and validity of the evidence will be judged by the assessor. There is one independent test which requires a pass mark of 50%.

Successful learners will progress to Level 3 Work-Based Land-Based Engineering Apprenticeship NI in Agriculture Machinery or Plant Machinery which will subsequently lead to the Level 4 Certificate in Advanced Automotive Diagnostic Techniques.

Learners will be placed in an agricultural garage and attend college two days per week. You will be required to complete Essential Skills in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT at level 2 if you do not have a GCSE grade C in these subjects. You will also study broader transferable skills in Employability and Personal and Social Development where appropriate.
