This isn’t just another apprenticeship.

This Lean Manufacturing Apprenticeship is designed to develop people who can identify waste, improve processes, and increase productivity from the start.

Delivered through our Learning Factory and real workplaces, apprentices gain hands-on experience while supporting real business improvements.

The ETCAL Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Business Improvement Techniques is aimed at apprentices who contribute to the daily operational activity and are in a position to effectively contribute to improvements of that activity.

  • Complying with Statutory Regulations and organisational safety requirements
  • Contributing to effective teamworking
  • Contributing to the application of workplace organisational techniques
  • Contributing to the application of continuous improvement techniques
  • Contributing to the development of visual management systems
  • Contributing to the application of problem-solving techniques

To apply for this programme, applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • At least four GCSEs at Grade G or above to include a minimum of Grade D in GCSE Maths and English
  • Anyone who doesn't hold a grade D or above in English and Maths will be required to undertake Essential Skills
  • A demonstrated interest in engineering, manufacturing, or technology
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • A clear commitment to learning and personal development
  • Minimum age: 16+

Applicants who do not fully meet the academic criteria may still be considered, subject to:

  • Initial assessment
  • Agreement to undertake Essential Skills (Numeracy, Literacy, ICT) alongside the apprenticeship where required.

Selection Process

Applicants will complete:

  • An application form
  • An initial assessment

A short screening discussion (in person or virtual) may be conducted where required to assess:

  • Motivation
  • Suitability for the programme
  • Alignment with employer requirements

Employers will be involved throughout the recruitment process and will make the final selection decision.

  • Step One – Submit your online application
  • Step Two - Complete MEGA assessment process
  • Step three – Interview with potential employers
  • Step four – Start your apprenticeship

At South West College, learners completing the ETCAL Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Business Improvement Techniques would typically progress in one of two directions: into higher-level study or into enhanced workplace responsibilities.

This programme is designed to support entry into the manufacturing and engineering sector, with a strong focus on Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement.

Apprentices will develop:

  • Practical workplace skills
  • Lean and problem-solving techniques
  • Core employability and technical competencies
