In the latest of our 'SWC Beyond' - Alumni success stories, we talk to Seamus Curran, Founder and CEO at Terracon.

Seamus completed a BTEC National Diploma in Engineering at SWC in June 2013.

What impact has studying at South West College had on your career?

Studying at South West College was a turning point in my career. Leaving school at 16 to pursue engineering was a big step, but the college provided the perfect environment to explore my options. The diverse curriculum, while centered on engineering, exposed me to different disciplines and helped me realize my passion for design and product development through CAD.

By focusing on this skillset and combining it with hands-on work experience at a local engineering firm, I gained a major advantage over my peers who took the traditional A-level route. This blend of practical and academic learning gave me real-world experience early on, setting me up for success in the industry.

Beyond the technical skills, the friendships I built at South West College have stood the test of time. Many of us still collaborate on projects across different companies, strengthening the local engineering network. Looking back, South West College didn’t just shape my career—it built the foundation for lifelong connections and opportunities.

Are there any staff members who played an important part in your studies at South West College that you would like to recognise?

Martin Carberry was a great mentor during my time at South West College. He provided invaluable industry insights, helping me focus on the right areas to kickstart my career. He also guided me on potential education pathways beyond SWC. To this day, we stay in touch, and I’m grateful for his support and advice.

Are there any specific achievements or career milestones that you would like to highlight?
