Enniskillen-based student Charlie Dougherty, currently studying a Foundation Degree in Visual Media Arts (Film) at South West College Erne campus, says the media pathway that goes all the way to degree level has provided her with exceptional hands-on experience, creative freedom and valuable industry connections, opening up opportunities she never knew existed and helping her build real-world experience in a short space of time.
Having previously attended Enniskillen Royal Grammar School, Charlie studied Moving Image Arts, where she developed a strong interest in film, sound production and animation.
This led her to attend a South West College open day during Year 12, which confirmed her decision.
Charlie said: “I was keen to learn more about the creative courses at the College and, after speaking to the media tutors at the open day, I knew media was the right path for me. The tutors made such a positive impression, giving me a clear insight into the course content and what college life would be like. SWC offered exactly what I was looking for.”
Charlie described the application process as straightforward and well-supported, with clear guidance from tutors following the open day. Since joining SWC, she has completed her BTEC National Extended Diploma in Media (equivalent to three A Levels) and is now progressing through her Foundation Degree, continuing to develop technical ability and creative confidence.
Reflecting on her journey at the College, Charlie said: “It’s not just textbooks, we’re building real-world skills. I’ve gained hands-on experience with professional equipment, access to industry speakers, and exposure to a wide range of creative disciplines.”
Charlie highlighted the supportive learning environment and the balance between independence and guidance.
Charlie said: “At SWC, the tutors are welcoming and supportive. You take ownership of your assignments, but there is always help available when you need it. They also offer guidance and connect us with industry opportunities.
“The workshops and guest talks from industry professionals, including a recent analogue photography session, have broadened my skills and strengthened my interest in both film and digital photography.
“Overall, my favourite part of SWC has been the freedom to develop creatively and gain hands-on experience with different cameras and techniques.”
Looking ahead, Charlie hopes to progress onto the BSc Hons programme at the College. She believes the pathway from Level 3 to degree level has equipped her with the technical knowledge, confidence and adaptability needed for a career in the creative industries, while helping her identify strengths and explore future opportunities within film and media.
For prospective students, Charlie said:
“Go for it. Attending the open day and speaking with tutors was the most important step I took. It changed my outlook completely and led me to the right course. SWC has opened so many doors and given me opportunities I never knew existed. The support throughout is incredible.”
Charlie credits her experience at SWC with developing key skills in creativity, teamwork and independence, all of which she plans to carry forward into her future career in media.
