South West College (SWC) has introduced a new all-age apprenticeship pathway in Health and Social Care, giving learners the opportunity to work, earn and gain recognised qualifications while preparing for careers in one of Northern Ireland’s most in-demand sectors.
The apprenticeship pathway offers a seamless progression route for learners, enabling those who complete the Pearson BTEC Level 2 First Diploma in Health and Social Care Traineeship at the Omagh campus or the OCN NI Level 2 ApprenticeshipNI in Health and Social Care at the Enniskillen campus to progress onto the OCN NI Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care Practice – ApprenticeshipNI (All Age), delivered across South West College's Omagh, Dungannon and Enniskillen campuses.
Combining classroom learning with practical work experience, the Level 2 programme equips learners with essential knowledge and hands-on experience across a range of care settings. Successful learners can progress directly to the Level 3 apprenticeship, as well as further study or employment opportunities.
Endorsed by the Northern Ireland Social Care Council (NISCC) and aligned with the regional apprenticeship framework, the Level 3 qualification develops the skills and competencies required to work effectively in health and social care roles. Key areas of study include communication, safeguarding, person-centred practice, mental health, dementia and learning disabilities, with assessment through coursework and workplace observation.
On completion, learners can progress to higher-level qualifications, university study or roles such as Healthcare Assistant and Senior Care Worker.
Chris McDowell, Curriculum Manager at SWC, said:
“Health and social care offers rewarding career opportunities for those who want to make a real difference. This new all-age apprenticeship pathway provides a clear route into the sector, combining practical experience with recognised qualifications and the opportunity to earn while you learn.
“Learners will develop the skills and confidence needed to meet the growing demand for professionals across the sector.”
Applications are now open for September 2026, with the Level 2 and Level 3 apprenticeships welcoming school leavers, healthcare staff and career changers looking to gain skills, experience and a long-term career in health and social care.
