Successful Scholarship winners announced at Annual Get Engineering Careers Fair

15 Apr 2025

Seven engineering students from South West College (SWC) Dungannon have been awarded a total of £11,000 in scholarships from leading industry firms, recognising their outstanding academic achievements and contributions to the field.

The scholarships were presented at SWC’s 11th Annual Get Engineering Careers Fair, held at the Dungannon campus. The flagship event brought together over thirty mechanical, manufacturing, and electrical engineering employers, offering invaluable insights into career pathways, from apprenticeships and Higher Level Apprenticeships (HLA) to degree-level education.

Attracting hundreds of job seekers and aspiring engineers, the event provided a key networking platform for students to engage with industry professionals and explore employment opportunities. Local MPs, MLAs, Invest Northern Ireland, and the Engineering Hub were also in attendance, reinforcing the event’s significance in promoting engineering careers.

The scholarship presentations, held at the SWC STEM Centre, celebrated student excellence. Powerscreen and BlueMAC awarded £6,000 in scholarships to six students studying on the GOLD Engineering Apprenticeship and Higher Level Apprenticeship in Engineering at Levels 3 to 5, while Strickland, through its prestigious annual bursary scheme in collaboration with SWC, granted £5,000 to two students pursuing higher education. Chris McCabe, Engineering Manager at BlueMAC (Manufacturing) Ltd, presented £1,000 scholarships to three Dungannon students: Stephen Potter, Year 2, and Jane McGrade, Year 3, both enrolled in the Ulster University Foundation Degree in Engineering (FdEng) with Specialisms (Manufacturing Engineering) (HLA), along with Kyle Beckett, Year 2, who is undertaking a Level 3 GOLD Engineering apprenticeship.

Ryan McLaughlin, Principal Product and Projects Engineer, Terex awarded £1,000 Powerscreen scholarships to three Dungannon students: Lauryn Ferrity, Year 3 HLA Engineering, Hollie Baird, Year 2 Level 3 GOLD Engineering, and Samuel Wright, Year 3 Level 3 GOLD Engineering. Unfortunately, Samuel was unable to attend the ceremony.

Martin McGuckin, Sales Manager at Strickland, presented £2,500 scholarships to two Dungannon students: Jane McGrade, Year 3 Ulster University Foundation Degree in Engineering (FdEng) with Specialisms (Manufacturing) (HLA) , and Jordan Moore, who is studying on the BEng (Hons) Engineering (Top Up) (validated by The Open University).

John Dolan, Deputy Head of Department Engineering at SWC, said:

“With over one hundred apprenticeship places available this year, Get Engineering continues to expand annually. Engineering remains a vital sector in the South West region, driving local economic growth.

"These scholarships celebrate exceptional students who have demonstrated excellence in both their college studies and workplace training. Thanks to the generous support of Powerscreen, BlueMAC, and Strickland, seven SWC students will receive financial assistance to ease the costs of their education. This support empowers them to develop their skills and knowledge, benefiting both themselves and the wider industry. We are sincerely grateful to these companies for their continued investment in our students' futures.”
