A passion for helping others has inspired Edie to pursue a rewarding career in adult nursing, following studying the HNC in Healthcare Practice at South West College.

From an early age, Edie felt drawn to caring roles, finding fulfilment in supporting those around her. Whether through babysitting or assisting her grandparents with daily tasks and organisation, these experiences shaped her desire to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

“I’ve always been drawn to a career in a caring profession because I feel my personality naturally aligns with that type of role,” she explained. “Those early experiences made me realise how much I value being able to support people in a practical and meaningful way.”

Edie describes her time at South West College as an important chapter in her journey. Over the past year, she has developed a broad range of knowledge and practical skills, while gaining clarity about her future career path.

“It has been a really rewarding experience and a significant turning point for me,” she said. “It helped me clearly identify that adult nursing is the right pathway for me.”

Initially beginning her studies in Social Work, Edie credits her college experience with helping her reassess her direction and find a role better suited to her strengths.

“My advice would be to stay open-minded and not be afraid to change direction if something doesn’t feel right,” she said. “Through experience, I realised I was better suited to a more hands-on role, which led me to adult nursing.”

Edie also emphasised the importance of embracing every opportunity available during study, particularly work placements.

“Placements give you a true insight into the role and help build your confidence,” she noted. “I would also encourage students to take full advantage of the support from tutors, as their guidance can really help prepare you for the next step.”

She credits the support and teaching at South West College as key to her readiness for university, particularly in developing academic writing and referencing skills.

“The support and guidance from my tutors have been incredibly valuable,” Edie added. “I feel much more confident moving forward and better prepared for what to expect at university and in my future career.”

As Edie prepares to take the next step into higher education, her journey is a great example of how determination, adaptability and the right support can shape a fulfilling career in health and social care.
