South West College recognised as a leading contributor to the development of Higher Level Apprenticeships

03 Jun 2026

South West College has been recognised as a leading contributor to the development of Higher Level Apprenticeships (HLAs), playing a central role in strengthening skills, supporting employers and driving economic growth across Northern Ireland.

Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald has praised the significant contribution made by employers and education providers working in partnership to deliver high-quality, work-based learning opportunities through HLAs.

The recognition follows the publication of NISRA’s latest analysis, Employer Participation in Higher Level Apprenticeships across Northern Ireland 2025, which highlights the continued growth and impact of the programme.

HLAs provide individuals with the opportunity to gain a recognised higher education qualification while developing advanced skills directly in the workplace, supporting both career progression and employer needs.

The findings show that South West College led the sector in employer engagement, working in partnership with 285 unique businesses and accounting for 28% of all participating employers and continues to demonstrate strong regional reach across Tyrone and Fermanagh, supporting a wide range of industries and employers.

South West College’s strong employer partnerships highlight its commitment to delivering industry-relevant skills development and responsive training solutions that meet regional and sectoral needs.

Noreen McGirr, Head of Apprenticeships said:

“At South West College, we are proud to be leading the way in the delivery of Higher Level Apprenticeships across the region. Our strong employer partnerships are at the heart of everything we do, ensuring that our apprentices gain the high-quality, industry-relevant skills needed to succeed, while also supporting employers to build a skilled and future-ready workforce.

The continued growth in participation reflects the strength of collaboration between the College, industry, and our learners, and reinforces our commitment to driving regional skills development, innovation and economic prosperity.”

The data also shows that HLAs are embedded across key growth sectors including computing, advanced manufacturing, construction and accounting—areas strongly supported by the College’s curriculum and employer networks.

Together with Southern Regional College and Ulster University, South West College accounts for more than half of all Higher Level Apprenticeship employer engagement, reinforcing its position as a key driver of skills development and economic progress in Northern Ireland.

Through its continued collaboration with employers, industry partners, and the wider education sector, South West College remains at the forefront of delivering innovative apprenticeship pathways that support productivity, regional balance, and long-term economic growth.
