SOUTH WEST College booked their place in the quarter-final of the Corn na Mac Lenin with a comprehensive 13-point victory over the Coleraine University on Monday night. The opening minutes were cagey, with both sides struggling to cope with the blustery conditions.

South West College dominated possession in the early stages, but they coughed up a number of goal-scoring chances.

The first score came 13 minutes into the game when Teemore’s Oisin Murphy struck for a goal to give the Enniskillen side an early lead. His goal was quickly followed up by a point from his club man Pauric Rice to extend their advantage to four points.

Ulster University replied midway through the half with two back-to-back frees, but the Enniskillen college hit for a second goal through Coa’s Robbie McKenna.

The lively Murphy chipped in with a few further points to give the South West College a 2-04 to 0-03 half time lead. In the second half, Coleraine stormed out of the blocks with Owen Roe O’Neill hitting the net in the first minute of the second half to bring his side back into the game.

The Ulster University player was a constant threat for Coleraine and he scored two further goals to bring his tally on the evening to 3-01. Despite the Coleraine onslaught, South West College stood firm and and Marius Kelly, Aaron Lee, Rice and Dylan Tierney hit successive points to reestablish their lead.

The Fermanagh team finished with a flourish, with Oisin Farry scoring two long range points, before Aaron Cassidy hit the net and Derrygonnelly’s Ciaran McGovern rounded off the victory.
