Access to industry standard tools, close to home

For many people, video games are a favourite pastime, but for local student Dara, they became the ultimate launchpad for creative freedom. Dara has spent the last year turning a lifelong passion for gaming into a tangible, professional career path, all while staying firmly rooted within his local community.

Like many creative minds, Dara found that traditional, exam-heavy academic environments didn't always offer the right space to thrive. Looking for an alternative route that prioritized actual building over textbook memorisation, he discovered the Game Design pathways at South West College (SWC).

Reflecting on his time studying Creative Media (Game Design) in the last year, Dara highlights how the unique atmosphere of the course completely shifted his approach to education:

"The environment on the course is great," says Dara. "It’s entirely evidence-based, meaning there are no traditional exams to stress over. Instead, you are building practical projects every single day. The tutors treat you like real creators, giving you the freedom to build your own worlds and design original video games from scratch. It’s a completely hands on experience."

During his studies, Dara has gained direct experience with advanced, industry standard software platforms—such as Unreal Engine, Blender, 3DS Max, and Substance Painter, the exact same tools used by major global gaming and visual asset studios.

By avoiding the rigid structures of examinations, the project-led curriculum enables students like Dara to focus entirely on continuous learning and practical execution. This methodology allows aspiring developers to graduate with a robust, professional design portfolio that demonstrates their technical and creative capabilities directly to employers.

Furthermore, the skills Dara is mastering extend far beyond entertainment. The global gaming industry is currently the largest entertainment market in the world, and its core technologies are now actively utilised across diverse sectors, including architectural visualisation, digital filmmaking, simulation engineering and virtual reality.

For Dara, the ability to access this specialised, high-tech education progression route without the financial burden or upheaval of moving away to a major city has been a game changer. By studying his Level 3 (A level equivalent) course locally at the college’s Omagh campus, he has been able to balance an intensive creative education with his regular lifestyle and local support network. Dara’s hoping to progress on to the Foundation Degree in Visual Arts (Game Design) then Top-Up to the BA/Hons Degree in our Erne Campus.
