Joanne Murphy’s pathway into a career in care stems from a genuine passion for helping others and making a difference where it matters. Now working as a Family Support Worker for both adults and children with learning difficulties, she reflected on her journey at our “Who Cares? We Care!” Health and Social Care event at Erne Campus.

After completing an Access Diploma course at South West College, followed by a Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care, Joanne was well-equipped to step into a role that aligns closely with her values. Her motivation is to create positive outcomes for people in need. In particular, she has a strong desire to support individuals with learning disabilities, helping them lead more fulfilling and empowered lives.

Returning to education as an adult was an experience Joanne truly embraced. She describes her time as a student as overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the supportive environment of the college.

“I loved being a student here,” she says. “The entire staff are outstanding, and the tutors are warm, friendly, supportive, caring, and fantastic professionals.”

In her current role, Joanne finds the greatest reward in the impact she has on others.

For those currently studying or considering a similar path, Joanne offers thoughtful advice. She encourages students to make full use of the support available to them, whether from tutors or LRC staff. She also stresses the importance of self-care; taking time to manage stress and maintain wellbeing is essential. Above all, she reminds students to enjoy the journey and take pride in their achievements.

Joanne’s story is an excellent example of how dedication, compassion, and the right support can lead to a deeply rewarding career in Health and Social Care.
