Each year, the Health and Social Care team at Erne Campus hosts its inspiring “Who Cares? We Care!” event; a valuable opportunity for current students to connect with professionals working across the sector. Many of these speakers are former students, returning to share their journeys, offer advice, and demonstrate the wide range of career pathways available through Higher Education at South West College and beyond.
This year’s event welcomed Joanne Murphy, William Lavelle, Melissa McFarland, Lily McKenna, Keava McManus and Edie McCallum, each of whom shared honest and insightful accounts of their careers so far, as well as the study routes that helped them get there.
Among the speakers was Joanne Murphy, who completed both the Access Diploma in Higher Education and the Foundation Degree in Science in Health and Social Care at South West College. Now working as a support worker for children and adults with disabilities, Joanne spoke passionately about her motivation to make a difference:
“I always wanted a job where I could create positive outcomes for people with learning disabilities.”
She described the reward of seeing those she supports happy and progressing, and encouraged students to make the most of their time at college:
“Enjoy the pathway that you are on and feel proud of yourself. Take all the help that’s available from tutors to LRC staff. I loved my time here; the staff are friendly, supportive and care about helping you succeed.”
Melissa McFarland, now a Social Worker with the Gateway Team at the Western Trust, also returned to share her journey. Having studied both the Foundation Degree in Science in Health and Social Care and a BSc (Hons) in Social Care, Melissa highlighted the passion that drove her career choice:
“I’ve always had a strong interest in helping others and making a positive difference in people’s lives. That’s what led me to a career where I can have a meaningful impact every day.”
Accompanying Melissa, was Social Work placement student, William Lavelle, who works alongside her in the Gateway Team. William previously completed a BSc(Hons) in Sociology at Ulster, but became interested in Social Work as a career following a class visit from a social work professional. After carrying out further research, he applied for the Relevant Graduate Route (RGR) and was successful. He is now in his first placement on the Ulster University Social Work programme (the two‑year accelerated route for relevant graduates).
Current SWC student, Edie, is completing the Higher National Certificate in Healthcare Practice and is preparing to progress to study Adult Nursing. She described her time at South West College as path-changing:
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at South West College. It’s been a turning point for me. I’ve gained a wide range of knowledge and practical skills and it has helped me to clearly identify the pathway that is right for me, which is adult nursing.”
She also praised the support she received:
“The guidance from my tutors has been incredibly valuable. I feel much more confident moving forward, especially in my academic writing and understanding of referencing; skills I know will be essential at university.”
Former student Keava McManus, who also studied the Foundation Degree in Science in Health and Social Care, is now working in a 1:1 support role for children with learning disabilities while continuing her studies. She credited her placement experience with shaping her career direction:
“The placement opportunities really opened doors for me and helped me realise I had a flair for a caring career. The college environment was supportive, friendly and enjoyable, and my current role allows me the flexibility to grow while doing what I love.”
Current student Lily McKenna, now studying the Foundation Degree in Science in Health and Social Care after completing a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Children’s Care, Learning and Development, spoke about the transition into Higher Education and how the college supported her progression.
Events like “Who Cares? We Care!” highlight the strong community within Health and Social Care at South West College where past and present students come together to inspire, guide and support one another.
