How hands-on experience and supportive tutors helped Mia build confidence, develop academic skills, and find her future career path in health and social care.

“This Foundation Degree helped me discover my passion for caring for children while developing the academic skills and confidence I need for university and my future career.”

Mia Crozier initially joined the Foundation Degree in Science in Health and Social Care course because, after leaving school, she was uncertain about the exact career path she wanted to pursue. However, she knew that she had a strong interest in health and social care and wanted to build a future within this sector. The course provided her with the opportunity to explore different areas of care while developing both her confidence and understanding of the profession.

Throughout her time on the Foundation Degree, Mia found the experience both enjoyable and rewarding. Although there were challenging moments during the course, she felt well supported by the tutors, who were always approachable, encouraging and willing to help whenever needed. Their guidance played an important role in helping her overcome difficulties and progress successfully through the programme.

One of the most valuable aspects of the course for Mia was completing 240 hours of work placement as part of the Work-Based Learning module. This hands-on experience allowed her to gain practical insight into the care sector and helped her realise that her true passion lies in caring for children. The placement gave her the opportunity to apply her learning in real-life settings, while also helping her develop important professional skills such as communication, teamwork, and responsibility.

In addition to practical experience, the Foundation Degree in Science in Health and Social Care also helped Mia build a strong academic foundation for the future. She developed essential university-level skills, including Harvard referencing, essay writing, research techniques, and academic communication. These skills have prepared her well for progressing to further study at university and will continue to benefit her throughout her education and career.

Overall, Mia has greatly enjoyed her experience on the Foundation Degree course and considers it to have been extremely beneficial. The course not only helped her discover the career path she wishes to follow, but also provided her with the confidence, practical experience, and academic skills needed to succeed in higher education and within the health and social care profession.
