Overview

New for 2023/24

Some people often prefer learning “On the job”. This qualification is aimed at employees that work with staff and customers in a sport and activity environment, as well as those who use and maintain equipment and facilities, including caravan parks. It is a work-based Active leisure, learning and well-being qualification that assesses the competence and knowledge that is required to work in these industries. Students will also have the opportunity to gain a qualification in fitness instruction.

This qualification is also designed to provide sport and recreation assistants/pool attendants and other front-line staff with the essential background knowledge in a number of core subjects which will enable them to develop their vocational skills and further their employability.

To successfully complete the apprenticeship, you must achieve the following essential skills qualifications as part of the apprenticeship, or already hold a recognized equivalent:

  • application of number – level 1
  • communication – level 1
  • information and communication technology – level 1

  • Support the work of the team and organization
  • Promote health, safety and welfare in active leisure and recreation
  • Support equality and diversity in active leisure and recreation
  • Understanding Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Understanding the Active Leisure and Learning Sector
  • Active IQ Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instructing
  • other optional modules and courses will be made available during the apprenticeship.

The minimum age requirement for this qualification is 16 plus.

You must be a new employee, or an existing employee taking on a new role to take part in the programme. There are no formal entry requirements for students undertaking this apprenticeship, however employers may apply their own criteria at recruitment.

Assessment is a combination of written assignment work with observation in the workplace by a qualified assessor.

This qualification provides progression onto:

Students will be given a full insight into the sport and leisure industry through employer and college-based experience and assessed using both theoretical and practical methods.
