After receiving her A-Level results last August, Cainnecha Ferguson from Belleek faced a setback in her journey toward a career in dentistry. Determined to strengthen her university application, she enrolled on the City and Guilds Level 3 Apprenticeship in Dental Nursing at South West College (SWC) Omagh campus a decision she describes as ‘the best one I’ve made.’

Over the past year, Cainnecha has gained invaluable firsthand clinical experience at Belmore Dental Clinic in Enniskillen. This practical exposure significantly enhanced her university application, helping her to secure multiple unconditional offers to study dentistry.

A former pupil of St. Fanchea’s College and Mount Lourdes Grammar School, Cainnecha excelled academically, achieving top grades in both her GCSEs and A-Level science subjects. Despite her strong academic background, her initial university application was unsuccessful, prompting her to take a gap year.

Now well on her way to achieving her dream of becoming a dentist, Cainnecha reflects positively on her journey:

“Taking a gap year and completing the Dental Nurse Apprenticeship has been the best decision I have made! It has helped me grow personally, gain practical experience, and secure a number of University Dentistry offers.”

She highlights that dental nursing is not only a rewarding career, but also an excellent foundation for progression into higher education.

Cainnecha said: “Dental nursing is a fantastic career in its own right, but it also provides a strong stepping stone for those aiming to progress into roles such as dentists, dental therapists, hygienists, technicians, and more. Everything I have learned over the past year has solidified my career choice and prepared me to take the next step in my career.”

Cainnecha credits her success to the supportive environment at SWC, particularly the guidance she received from her tutor, Charlene.

“The college has been fantastic; there is always someone willing to help. My tutor has been incredibly supportive, and the apprenticeship has been a great stepping stone towards my future in dentistry.”

For students who may find themselves in a similar position this year or are uncertain about their next steps, Cainnecha encourages them to be positive and to explore all the options available.

Cainnecha said: “Looking back, taking a gap year was the best thing that ever happened to me. I would encourage anyone in a similar situation to explore their options at their local further education college as this course has truly helped me achieve my career aspirations.”

Cainnecha’s tutor, Charlene McElchar, praised her determination and dedication:

“Cainnecha’s journey is a powerful example of perseverance, and the impact further education and apprenticeships can have on career progression. Her success highlights the value of vocational learning and the benefits of gaining firsthand experience. We are incredibly proud of Cainnecha and we would like to wish her all the best as she takes the next step in her career journey.”
