Overview

The course supports the skills and knowledge development requirements for access into the engineering working environment and contains 2 components:

1 Engineering qualifications (Combined)

  • Level 2 Diploma in Engineering

2. Essential Skills at an appropriate level in:

  • Numeracy
  • Literacy

3. Digital Skills

  • ICT

4. Transferable Skills

  • Work Placement
  • Project Based Learning

The course supports learner skills and knowledge development for the following pathways:

  • Maintenance Technology
  • Fabrication and Welding Technology
  • Electrical and Electronics Technology
  • Technical Support

You will learn a wide range of vocational skills including, CAD, welding and machining, whilst developing problem solving, communication and time-management skills working in small teams through practical engineering projects.

Note: Technology And Skills Centre, Enniskillen apprentices have the additional optional of an Electrical Engineering Pathway and Manufacturing Pathway, activities including the following:

  • Wiring and Testing Electrical Equipment and Circuits.

  • Understanding Health and Safety Principles
  • Mathematics for Engineers
  • Understanding the Principles of Science used within Engineering
  • Understanding the Materials used in Engineering
  • Hand Fitting (Cookstown/Dungannon/Omagh Campuses)
  • Producing Plate Work Components and Assemblies (Cookstown/Dungannon/Omagh Campuses)
  • Preparing and Using MIG Welding Equipment (Cookstown/Dungannon/Omagh Campuses)
  • CAD (Cookstown/Dungannon/Omagh Campuses)
  • Hydraulics (Cookstown/Dungannon/Omagh Campuses)
  • Industrial Coating (Cookstown/Dungannon/Omagh Campuses)
  • Electrical Engineering Pathway (Technology & Skills Centre, Enniskillen)
  • Essential Skills (All Campuses)
  • Broader Transversal Skills in Preparation and to Support Working in an Engineering Environment (All Campuses)

Applicants will be required to hold a minimum of a Level 1 qualification, or 4 GCSEs at grades G or above including Math's grade D & English grade E.​

The minimum age requirement for this qualification is 16 plus.

The Mandatory units are assessed by an online multiple-choice assessment and assignment tasks. The practical units are assessed by short answer question assignment tasks and practical tasks completed in the college workshops.

Students on the Traineeship, can migrate to a Level 2 Apprenticeship when they secure an employer.

Completion of Level 2 Engineering enables career progression to Level 3 Engineering Apprenticeship in the following disciplines:

  • Fabrication and Welding
  • Maintenance, Installation and Commissioning
  • Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • Technical Support

Additional units can be undertaken to support company/job requirements.
