Overview

The course supports the skills and knowledge development requirements for technician access into the engineering working environment in and contains 3 components: -

1. Engineering Qualifications (Combined)

  • Pearson’s BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering
  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations with additional units
  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in an Engineering Pathway


2. Essential Skills at Level 2 in:

  • ICT (if required)

3. Optional Qualifications

  • Level 3 Award in Food Safety for Food Manufacturing
  • PEO L1 TIG Welding Equipment
  • Level 3 Award in The Requirements of Electrical Installation (18th Edition) and safe isolation
  • Testing Electrical Equipment and Circuits

This course comprises of a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering alongside both NVQ Level 2 and NVQ Level 3 qualifications. This is designed to equip individuals with knowledge, understanding behaviours and practical skills required for success in a range of mechanical and electrical maintenance roles with additional units to meet the food sector requirement.

The Optional Modules can be selected as required by your employer.

Year One

  • Engineering Principles
  • Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team
  • Applied Commercial and Quality Principles in Engineering
  • A Specialist Engineering Project
  • Engineering Product Design and Manufacture
  • Electrical Installation of Hardware and Cables and Wiring
  • Pneumatic and Hydraulic Systems
  • Manufacturing Secondary Machining Processes including Bench Fitting and Machining
  • Programmable Logic Controllers
  • Maintenance of Mechanical Systems
  • Level 3 Award in Food Safety for Food Manufacturing
  • PEO Level 1 TIG Welding
  • Maintaining Electrical Equipment/Systems
  • Level 3 Award in the Requirements of Electrical Installation (18th Edition)
  • Safe Isolation
  • CSR
  • CNC

6 GCSEs at grades A* - C including Mathematics and English or equivalent

Entry is also subject to:

  • Successful interview
  • Psychometric test
  • Gaining Employment with suitable company

There are two separate assessment methods throughout the course.

The academic BTEC assessments are a blend of projects and assignments throughout the duration of the course and external assessments. These will offer opportunities to achieve Pass, Merit, and Distinction criteria, and will be tracked though the year to form one final grade for each unit, and an end of year grade for the overall course.

The more practical NVQ element of the course will be assessed in College at Level 2 and from ‘work based visits’ where by you achieve the qualification by producing evidence of the work you are doing on your placement to satisfy pre-determined criteria at Level 3.

The program of study supports the following sample of vocational pathways: -

  • Factory Maintenance
  • Food and Drink Sector Maintenance
  • Multi Skilled Maintenance
