Two local learners, Fiona McGovern from Blacklion and Laura Mc Sorley from Castlederg, are celebrating new career opportunities after successfully completing the Pearson BTEC Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians at South West College.
Delivered at the College’s Erne Campus in Enniskillen, the course is designed to equip learners with the skills and knowledge required to thrive in the evolving pharmacy sector. Both Fiona and Laura entered the programme with significant experience in community pharmacy and a shared ambition to take on greater responsibilities in their roles.
Fiona McGovern, now working as an accuracy checking pharmacy technician at Belcoo Pharmacy, praised the College’s blended learning model:
“With the expansion of pharmacy services, the role of the Pharmacy team has evolved significantly, requiring new and broader skill sets. I wanted to further develop my role and take on more responsibility. South West College was the ideal choice because of its blended learning approach – combining face-to-face classes, online learning and full-time work which helped me better understand the curriculum and apply it in real-world settings.”
She added, “Our tutor Bronwyn was exceptional—always there when we needed help available and full of valuable, practical insights. I’ve grown in confidence and now contribute more meaningfully to patient care. I’d encourage anyone thinking about returning to education to consider South West College.”
Laura Mc Sorley, employed in a community pharmacy in Castlederg, shared a similar experience.
“I’ve worked in pharmacy for six years and wanted to build on my skills to better support my team and patients. The support I received at South West College was fantastic. Bronwyn was brilliant, and the small class meant we all became friends and supported one another. I’m now confident in taking on a more advanced role within the pharmacy.”
Both students credit their success to the College’s supportive environment, practical course content, and the ability to apply learning directly to the workplace.
The Pearson BTEC Level 3 Diploma at South West College provides a direct route into pharmacy technician roles and is ideal for those already working in pharmacy or those considering a new career in healthcare. The course is delivered through a flexible model that allows learners to remain employed while gaining vital qualifications.
