Overview

This programme of study is fully funded for apprentices who are employed in the Health and Social Care field, and employers will receive a financial bonus when each student successfully completes the apprenticeship.

Learners will learn how to supervise and administer care to clients. The learner will also ensure that each client is approached in a person centred way and will gain the knowledge and skills to operate in this way. It is imperative that carers work in a professional manner at all times, hence the need for confidentiality and the adherence to the NISCC Code of Conduct. Level 3 carers will also learn about the importance of recording accurately and reporting appropriately within the policies and procedures of the organisation.

To fully achieve the Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care, students are required to undertake the OCN NI Level 3 Certificate in Induction into Adult Social Care qualification, City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care, Level 2 Essential Skills Literacy, Numeracy and ICT. Should candidates have a GCSE grade C (or equivalent) in English, Mathematics and ICT they will be exempt from undertaking the Essential Skills qualifications, on receipt of certified evidence of existing qualifications.

To achieve the OCN Level 3 Certificate in Induction into Adult Social Care, students must complete 8 units of study. A range of
assessment methods can be used for this qualification to include coursework, assignment, written/electronic portfolio of evidence
or demonstration.

To achieve the Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (NI) learners must achieve a minimum of 58 credits. To do this they must
achieve: 28 credits from the mandatory units, at least 30 credits from optional units.

Example of mandatory units include: Communication, Health and Well being, Principles and Values, CPD in the context of health and social care.

Examples of optional units include: Understand the process and experience of dementia, Physical disability, Infection Control, Physiological measurements, Pressure area care, Support in the administration of medicines, Understand and enable interaction and communication with individuals who have dementia, Provide support to manage pain and discomfort, Provide support to maintain and develop skills for every day life.

Learners should be a minimum of 18 years old. It is highly recommended that learners have completed the City and
Guilds Level 2 in Health and Social Care qualification or equivalent, plus have a minimum of one year experience in
the care field. Learners are required to undertake an Access NI Check.

For all age apprenticeships, candidates must be employed for a minimum of 21 hours per week in the care field. If you
do not have a GCSE grade C (or equivalent) in English, Mathematics and ICT, you will be required to gain these
qualifications as part of the Apprenticeship Framework.

Learners will be assessed by submission of evidence from written assignments and workplace observations.

Learners may progress into employment as a senior care worker in residential, nursing or domiciliary settings.

Learners may also gain employment as a health care assistant in the hospital settings, undertaking specific roles such as phlebotomist.

Candidates need to be employed for a minimum 21 hours per a week in a care environment. They are also required to undertake essential skills in literacy, numeracy and ICT if they do not have GCSE Grade C or above in these subject areas. Employability qualifications are on offer to students as well as on-line courses to support their learning.
