From SWC to Global Webinars: My Journey Into Computing - Reese McCaughey
When I first enrolled at South West College (SWC) in Dungannon, I had no idea just how far the journey would take me. I didn’t have a set plan after school—I just knew I wanted to do something in computing. Two years later, I’ve not only found my path, but I’ve also spoken on global platforms, pushed through fears I thought would hold me back, and connected with some of the most inspiring people I’ve ever met.

One of the biggest turning points was making it to the top 5 of the “Are You AI Ready?” competition. To be honest, I was shocked. I hadn’t felt fully prepared for the presentation, but once I stood in front of the judges and saw the other participants, I realised how proud I was just to be there. That moment taught me that even when you feel unsure, showing up matters. And it was the start of something bigger.
Shortly after, I was selected to speak during the worldwide Cisco webinar for International Girls in ICT Day. That event was nothing short of life-changing. I had the chance to speak to—and learn from—incredible women in tech from around the globe. Their stories, advice, and passion left a mark on me. It was the second time I faced a crowd and overcame my fear of public speaking. What made it even more special was the feedback I got—people really resonated with my story. It reminded me that sharing your journey, no matter where you are on it, can be powerful.

Looking back, I owe so much to the people around me. My classmates and I became a tight-knit group, always helping each other out, inside and outside of class. And my lecturers—well, they’ve been the real game-changers. Their support, encouragement, and the opportunities they gave me (from panels to showcases) were key in building my confidence and experience.
If you’re a young woman considering a career in IT, here’s my advice: just go for it. Forget the stigmas and don’t let barriers stop you. There’s a place for you in this field, and it’s full of opportunity. With the right support—and a bit of determination—you’ll be surprised how far you can go.
Now, I’m preparing to study Software Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast, while continuing to build my skills in cyber security through night classes. These are the two areas I’ve grown most passionate about during my course at SWC.

Studying IT at SWC has been more than just an education—it’s been the foundation of my career. The Level 3 Information Technology course opened the door to so many paths in computing, from software development to cybersecurity. If you’re not sure what area you want to pursue yet, this course is the perfect starting point. I’d honestly do it all over again if I could.
Every opportunity, every challenge, every late-night assignment helped shape who I am today—and I’m excited for what’s next.
