For Enniskillen student Jakub Szpreglewski, returning to education was about more than gaining a qualification — it was about completing a journey he began over 20 years ago and reigniting his passion for the hospitality industry.

Currently studying the Ulster University Foundation Degree in Tourism, Hospitality & Events Management with Specialisms in Culinary Arts at South West College, Jakub has embraced the opportunity to refresh and enhance his extensive industry knowledge while preparing for new opportunities in the future.

"I chose to study at South West College because I wanted to refresh and improve my hospitality skills and finally complete a journey I started over 20 years ago," he explains. "The course has already had a big impact on both my academic and personal growth by helping me discover new industry trends, build confidence, and enjoy learning again."

With more than two decades of experience in hospitality and currently working as Head Chef at Ponderosa Restaurant, Jakub brings a wealth of practical expertise to the classroom. However, he believes there is always something new to learn.

"Studying at South West College helps me refresh my knowledge, improve my skills, and stay up to date with new trends in hospitality," he says.

Jakub has thoroughly enjoyed his experience at South West College, praising both the quality of teaching and the supportive learning environment.

"My experience at South West College has been very positive, and I've really enjoyed learning from knowledgeable and professional lecturers. I'm proud of how well I've performed across all of my modules so far, and I'm looking forward to continuing into next year and exploring new subjects."

The course has also reignited his enthusiasm for education and encouraged him to think about progressing even further academically.

"My course has given me new motivation and helped me rediscover my passion for the hospitality industry. It has inspired me to continue my education further, and I would love to progress into higher education in the future if I achieve strong results in my foundation degree."

Balancing the demands of full-time work, family life, and studying has not been without its challenges. However, Jakub believes the rewards far outweigh the sacrifices.

"One of the biggest challenges has been balancing full-time work as a chef with family life and studying, but I believe the hard work is worth it. The course has shown me that returning to education is very achievable, and the personal and career benefits make the effort worthwhile."

For anyone considering a career in hospitality, Jakub strongly recommends South West College.

"The college offers great support from staff, valuable industry knowledge, and excellent opportunities for future career growth and progression. I've really enjoyed my first year, and my only regret is not returning to education sooner."

Looking ahead, Jakub remains excited about what the future holds.

"What inspires me most is my passion for the hospitality industry and the desire to keep improving myself professionally and personally. While I haven't decided on a specific future path yet, I know this degree will create new opportunities and could also open the door to further higher education in the future."

Jakub's story is a testament to the value of lifelong learning, proving that it's never too late to invest in yourself, develop new skills, and pursue your ambitions.
