Overview

This Foundation Degree prepares you for a career in Hospitality and Tourism Management. It focuses on acquisition and application of knowledge relevant to the role of the manager in the global hospitality industry. Through work-based learning, the course provides opportunities to develop and enhance your practical, personal and interpersonal skills vital to successful performance in the workplace. On completion, you will be equipped to operate in a management role in the industry. Part time course is delivered over 2.5 years, with work based learning taking place in semester 3 of year 1 and 2.

You will gain an understanding of the underpinning theory of hospitality, travel and tourism management from a global perspective. You will also have the opportunity to develop skills required to work effectively as a manager in this industry.

Successful completion of the programme requires learners to achieve 240 CATS points from modules studied including: Introduction to Tourism Hospitality and Events, Management in Action, Managing Financial Performance, Events Operations, Global and Cultural Events, Personal Professional Development, People Management, Marketing and Entrepreneurship.

Range of optional modules to be studied, to determine specialism pathways including, Tourism pathway: Inbound and Domestic Tourism; Global Travel Destinations, Global Tourism Management. Hospitality pathway: Food and Beverage Service Operations; Facility Operations, Food and Beverage Management.

64 - 72 UCAS tariff points.

Four GCSE passes including English and Maths or equivalent. Two A Levels or equivalent. Refer to general entry requirements.

Where an applicant does not hold the formal academic requirements for entry to the programme, but can demonstrate relevant experiential learning across a range of industries, they may apply for admission through the College Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) process. In such cases, contact the Course Director for the programme who will advise further.

To be eligible to commence study on the HLA Pathway, applicants must have secured full-time paid employment in a relevant hospitality or tourism sector.

Course International Entry Requirements:

International students (for whom English is not their first language), must demonstrate their competence in written and spoken English at IELTS – Academic 6.0, with minimum 5.5 in all four elements of the test. Trinity ISE - Pass at Level 3 (with a Pass in each component) also meets this requirement for Tier 4 visa purposes.

Assessment will take the form of written assignments, written reports, practical assessments, presentations and formal examinations. Learners will complete a period of Work Based Learning and complete a project whilst on placement.

On completion of the course successful Learners may progress to Honours Degrees such as International Travel & Tourism Management at Ulster University. Bridging options for final year entry are possible subject to academic performance and mapping of modules or pathway undertaken. Learners can progress into employment in a wide variety of organisations at junior or duty management level.

Note: It is the responsibility of the applicant to check each University’s admission and progression requirements before enrolling on a course at the College.

2024/25 fees:

Full-time: £2,700 (payable for each year)

Part-Time: £265 per 20-credit module and £530 per 40-credit module

HLA: N/A

During your course you may be required to purchase course textbooks and incur additional costs for uniform, field trips, printing, photocopying and binding. The overall additional costs incurred to support your studies may be in the region of £100 or more per year.

This programme will be reviewed by Ulster University in 2023/24. The review process involves updating course information, such as the programme title, curriculum content, module titles and teaching and assessment strategies. The college will endeavour to make available the most update information for this course once the review is complete.
