South West College (SWC) proudly welcomed over 100 secondary-level students to its Omagh campus for the Cisco Girls in IT event, aimed at inspiring and engaging young female students in the world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). Designed to spark interest and confidence in STEM subjects, the event showcased real-world applications, highlighted future career pathways, and promoted greater gender diversity in technology-driven industries. The event welcomed female students aged 12–14 from Loreto Grammar School, Omagh; Aughnacloy College; Dean Maguire College, Carrickmore; St Joseph's Grammar School, Donaghmore; and Omagh High School. The day began with keynote talks from industry experts, offering insight and inspiration into the world of artificial intelligence (AI), followed by interactive workshops exploring topics such as cyber security, networking, programming and robotics. The afternoon concluded with a ‘Dragons Den’ style challenge, encouraging teamwork, innovation and entrepreneurial thinking. Nicole Donnelly Lecturer in Computing said: “We were delighted to welcome students to our Omagh campus for this event. It’s all about showcasing what STEM is really about from hands-on experiences to real-world applications and opening young minds to the vast and rewarding career paths available to women in STEM. With a predicted shortage of qualified STEM professionals to meet future demand for digital and technology-focused roles, our aim is to help reverse the gender imbalance in these fields. We want to spark enthusiasm for STEM among girls and promote the vast and varied opportunities that exist here at the College and beyond.” “The Cisco Girls in IT events have long been recognised for equipping and empowering students with discovery and knowledge on STEM subjects. By bringing together bright young minds, we can dispel myths and create excitement around STEM careers and place a spotlight on the vast opportunities and roles that a future within the technology sector can offer,” said Adele Every, Managing Director, Public Sector at Cisco. “It was great to see the event take place at South West College with students engaging and enjoying the many different activities available to them from learning about AI to understanding cybersecurity.” Computing Learn more Share Sign up.
