Sophie McCusker from Dromore is currently studying a Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies at South West College (SWC) and praises the college’s affordable, local, and accessible pathway into higher education. Validated by Queen’s University, the course allows Sophie to work towards her degree while gaining hands-on experience two days a week at her former primary school, St. Dympna’s in Dromore.

At A Level, Sophie studied Religion and Health and Social Care at Drumragh Integrated College and joined SWC through the Entitlement Framework to study a BTEC Level 3 in Applied Science. Sophie thrived in the College and her exceptional work earned her ‘Science Student of the Year’ at the College’s Celebration of Success. During a placement at St. Dympna's Primary School in Dromore, Sophie discovered her passion for working with children, an experience that shaped her future career goals.

Now starting her foundation degree, quality assured by Stranmillis University College, Sophie says staying local was an easy decision: “I hadn’t realised I could study a Queen’s University degree at the College, and when I found out, it was perfect because it allows me to combine work and study in early years. Having previously studied as an Entitlement Framework student, I found the supportive atmosphere at the College really helped me grow. Progressing to the Foundation Degree felt like a natural step.”

The course structure enables Sophie to attend classes three days a week while spending the remaining days gaining valuable practical experience at St. Dympna’s.

Sophie said: “A big bonus is not having to travel to Belfast. The fees are lower, I’m working in the school I once attended, in a field I love, and gaining valuable experience every week - I couldn’t ask for more.”

Looking ahead, Sophie plans to progress to the BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies at the College and potentially to postgraduate study to become a fully qualified teacher.

Sophie said: “I’m grateful to have this opportunity right on my doorstep, and I encourage others to explore the wide range of courses and pathways at SWC, as they might just offer the perfect route to help you achieve your goals, too.”
