Did you know that we offer a part-time version of the QUB Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies at our Omagh Campus? This three-year program allows you to earn the qualification you've always wanted while balancing your life commitments. The Foundation Degree will provide you with the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of early years education and related topics, equipping you to become a competent and well-qualified Early Years Practitioner. We spoke with two current students who shared their thoughts on the course, the opportunities it offers, and their experiences studying at South West College.

Amy Little, from Fermanagh, is in her third year of the Part-Time QUB Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies at our Omagh Campus and has some words of advice for anyone considering this pathway:

"I have always wanted to work with children, and the Foundation Degree seemed like the perfect course for me. While it can be challenging to come home from work and complete assignments, I find it rewarding to be able to work while studying. It is much more convenient than travelling to Belfast.

Although it may seem like a long journey, everything you learn from this Foundation Degree will be beneficial for any profession you pursue afterwards."

Fellow student Catherine McCormack from Cookstown, is also in third year, and had this to say;

"I wanted to pursue a career in teaching, but I found that I really enjoyed working and gaining experience in the early years sector. This degree has allowed me to do both. After completing my A-levels, I took a gap year during which I realised that I loved working in a role where I could contribute to the quality of a child's early learning journey.

I started as relief staff, working a few hours a week at my local pre-school education centre. From there, I advanced to the positions of deputy leader and temporary leader. Currently, I work in a primary school as a Special Educational Needs (SEN) assistant and serve as the acting leader of an after-school club. I've truly loved this experience. The smaller class sizes at SWC have enabled me to form close connections with my class. The college has also provided great support, especially since I am neurodiverse, and I have always felt at ease throughout the past three years.

I would encourage more individuals to consider part-time studying. By working alongside my degree, I have been able to apply my knowledge and understanding of the modules in a practical setting. It's wonderful to see that alternative ways of learning are being encouraged. This degree has been a significant stepping stone toward my ultimate goal of becoming a primary special needs teacher.
