Former South West College (SWC) dental apprentice Zoe Sumerville, from Clogher, has credited her apprenticeship and the support of SWC for helping her secure a coveted place on the highly competitive Dental Therapy degree at the University of Liverpool.

One of just five students accepted onto the prestigious course, Zoe is sharing her story to highlight how apprenticeships can offer a pathway to higher education and specialist careers. She says the combination of academic learning, hands-on clinical experience, and tailored support throughout her apprenticeship provided the perfect foundation for her success.

Zoe began her journey at SWC’s Omagh campus, enrolling on the City & Guilds Level 3 Apprenticeship in Dental Nursing after discovering the opportunity through Bupa. Drawn to the chance to earn while gaining practical experience, she chose SWC as the ideal provider to support her ambitions in dentistry.

Reflecting on her journey, Zoe said:
“Working while studying gave me the opportunity to gain real clinical experience while building my knowledge. After a few months with Bupa, I realised just how passionate I was about the dental profession and how many progression routes it offered.”

Zoe thrived in SWC’s learner-focused environment and was named Top Student on her course - recognition of her dedication, clinical skills, and commitment to patient care.

Zoe added: “My experience at South West College was so positive.
The hands-on learning and support from my tutor were invaluable. Charlene always went the extra mile. I developed essential clinical skills and gained a deep understanding of professionalism and patient care, all of which prepared me for success in the workplace.”

After completing her qualification, Zoe remained with Bupa and enhanced her expertise by completing the Foundation Dentist Dental Nurse course through the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency. With her experience and qualifications firmly in place, she successfully applied to the University of Liverpool’s Dental Therapy degree, which includes a foundation year followed by three years of specialist training.

Speaking about her success, Zoe said:
“Both Bupa and South West College were instrumental in helping me achieve this. They provided the qualifications, experience, and encouragement I needed to grow. The support from my colleagues, my tutor Charlene, and my family helped me push through challenges and reach this goal. I’m incredibly proud to have been accepted, and I can’t wait to begin the next chapter in my career and contribute to improving dental healthcare.”

Zoe now encourages others to consider apprenticeships as a credible and rewarding route into specialist careers:
“I would absolutely recommend South West College. The course was practical, career-focused, and the staff were incredibly supportive. Dental therapy is a fantastic profession and opens doors to further opportunities. Charlene and the College helped me transition smoothly from college to a professional role.”

Charlene McElchar, Zoe’s tutor at SWC, praised her former student’s dedication and drive:
“SWC works closely with dental practices and professionals to ensure our training meets industry needs. Zoe’s journey is a fantastic example of how apprenticeships and further education can lead to real opportunities. Her professionalism, resilience, and commitment to learning are inspiring. We’re incredibly proud of what she has achieved and wish her continued success as she begins this exciting new chapter.”
