Overview

This course is one year, on which you will have four units (A 1 Skills Development, A2 Art and Design Project, B1 Personal Development and C1 Responding to a Creative Brief), and study Illustration, branding & advertising, digital imaging and film & sound. You will put together a portfolio of work for progression and explore interview techniques and practice presentation skills. You will choose your own specialist subject for the Responding to a Creative Brief Project, and using the theme provided, produce a series of outcomes which are displayed in an exhibition of student work, organised by the students.

Your course will consist of the following components:

A 2-week induction;

A professional & technical qualification: Pearson BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design Skills;

An OCN NI T-Skills qualification (Transversal Skills);

Level 2 Essential Skills in Numeracy and Literacy (where GCSE grade C or equivalent has not already been achieved);

Digital skills development;

Work Based Simulation;

Professional & Technical skills development.

You will develop a broad and valuable range of skills essential for progression into any creative discipline. Alongside the subject-specific content offered in this qualification, you will also build transferable skills that are highly beneficial for further study and future employment. These include effective communication, project planning and management, and creative problem-solving.

Studying this course at SWC will also support your personal development—helping you grow in confidence and encouraging you to take ownership of your direction, work, and choices.

  • A1 Skills Development
  • A2 Art & Design Project
  • B1 Personal Development
  • C1 Responding to a Brief (Major Project)
  • OCN NI T-Skills qualification (Tranversal Skills);
  • Digital Skills

Normally, applicants will have to hold a minimum of a Level 1 qualification defined as 4 GCSEs at grades D-G including English and Maths at grade F or higher or equivalent.

Applicants that have not obtained a Level 1 qualification profile but can show an equivalent level of experiential learning may also undertake a NI Traineeship. Suitability will also be informed by an initial assessment of your current level of literacy and numeracy prior to enrolment.

Entry is subject to application and introductory meetings with the course co-ordinator.

You will be assessed throughout the year, and you will be expected to complete a range of assignments on an ongoing basis. This includes the production of practical projects with accompanying digitally delivered documentation. Modules are assessed internally and externally moderated. There are no exams.

Achievement of the Full NI Traineeship Diploma

Those that complete the qualifications equivalent to five GCSEs at Grade C passes including English (or Communications Level 2) and Maths (or Application of Number Level 2) will receive an overarching NI Traineeship Diploma issued by the Department for the Economy. Achievement of BTEC Level 2 in Art & Design Skills may allow progression to the BTEC Level 3 in the College subject to course entry requirements.

Partial Achievement

Trainees who do not achieve all the components will be recognised for partial achievement. This may mean that the trainee passes the professional & technical qualification but does not achieve Level 2 Communication or Level 2 Numeracy. Trainees who have partial achievement may be able to progress to Further Education Level 3.

Students may also be offered:

Work Experience/Simulations/Project Based Learning

Essential Skills in Communication and or Numeracy.

GCSE Maths & GCSE English (resit) depending on grades.
