Overview

Do you want to become a qualified Classroom Assistant? Do you want to be qualified to work in either primary or secondary school?

Then this course is for you! This qualification provides learners with an understanding of the knowledge needed when working directly with children and young people in a school or college environment. It will enable learners to gain an understanding of elements including children and young people’s development and safeguarding their welfare.

It covers all aspects of specialist support, including: planning; delivering and reviewing assessment strategies to support learning alongside the teacher; bilingual support; special needs support; and personal development and reflective practice. Learners are required to complete 200 hours of work placement.

This course is delivered 1 day per week in Omagh and Enniskillen campuses and 200 hours on placement are required.

This qualification aims to:
• Focus on the study of supporting teaching and learning
• Offer breadth and depth of study, incorporating a key core of knowledge

This course will

• Provide learners with knowledge and understanding needed to work in a school or college environment

• Provide a stepping stone into further learning within the sector

What could this qualification lead to?

Learners can progress onto the Level 4 Certificate for the Advanced Practitioner in Schools and Colleges, a foundation degree or specialist roles within the workforce

Year One

Learners must complete a total of 16 mandatory modules, examples of which are :

  • Understand how to safeguard children and young people
  • Support positive behaviour in children and young people
  • Support English and Maths skills
  • Understand how to support bilingual learners
  • Support assessment for learning and Understand how to support children and young people with special educational needs disabilities

Learners are required to have a minimum of 4 GCSE’s at grade C or above (or equivalent) to include English and Maths.

To achieve this qualification learners are required to successfully complete all 16 units. Assessment is an internally assessed but externally quality assured portfolio of evidence.

Learners can progress onto the Level 4 Certificate for the Advanced Practitioner in Schools and Colleges, a foundation degree or specialist roles within the workforce to gain employment in Supporting Teaching and Learning in an educational institution. This qualification carries UCAS points.

This course is delivered 1 day per week in Omagh and Enniskillen campuses and 200 hours on placement are required.
