Foundation Degree and NCFE Level 3 Travel and Tourism student at SWC Erne Campus recently took part in a three-day visit to Manchester, packed with immersive learning experiences, hands-on industry training, and inspiring cultural visits.
The highlight of the trip was an intensive, full-day air cabin crew training session with industry experts Sky People Training. Students were given the unique opportunity to step into the role of professional cabin crew, participating in high-level simulations including:
- A full-scale emergency evacuation, complete with a thrilling descent down an evacuation slide,
- Passenger evacuation from a smoke-filled cabin,
- And firefighting drills to extinguish onboard fires – all under the guidance of Sky People’s experienced trainer.
These practical exercises provided students with a real taste of the aviation industry's safety protocols and high-pressure responsibilities, equipping them with invaluable skills for their future careers.
In addition to the aviation training, the trip offered a diverse and enriching cultural itinerary. Students, guided by their lecturers Siobhan Hallawell and Clodagh Swift, enjoyed a tour of Salford Quays, taking in its rich history and modern regeneration. Visits to the Imperial War Museum, Coronation Street Studios, and The Lowry Centre brought together elements of heritage, media, and the arts – all vital aspects of the UK’s thriving tourism industry.
Despite the packed schedule, the atmosphere remained upbeat and enthusiastic throughout. Reflecting on the visit Clodagh said;
"It was an intense few days, but everyone found it incredibly enjoyable and rewarding. The experience was not only educational but truly inspirational for our aspiring travel and tourism professionals. This trip represents a key part of the NCFE Level 3 Travel and Tourism course, combining classroom learning with real-world exposure to help students gain confidence, insight, and a competitive edge in their future careers."
