What impact has studying at South West College had on your career?

Studying at South West College truly sparked my passion for learning. I eagerly dove into every subject I could—especially those courses that didn’t involve placements—simply because I was so hungry to learn. At the time, I hadn’t even considered business, but exploring a wide range of topics eventually led me to discover a genuine love for it. Every course I took helped shape my understanding and skills, and today, they’ve all contributed to my journey as a disabled entrepreneur. The diverse learning experiences I gained have been the cornerstone of my career development, giving me the confidence and foundation to pursue my entrepreneurial dreams.

Are there any staff members who played an important part in your studies at South West College that you would like to recognise?

Joan Major saw my potential from day one and she encouraged me to continue my studies. Joan applied to the Essential Skills awards and I was awarded as the Fermanagh and overall Northern Ireland winner. Every teacher during the diploma and the degrees were so encouraging and supportive. They were respectful of my abilities and realised when I wanted to be independent like presenting by myself instead of recording. Receptionists, maintenance team and librarians were also extremely helpful –they all knew me by name and there was many a book sent down to the classroom as it was difficult for me to access the library being a wheelchair user.

Are there any specific achievements or career milestones that you would like to highlight?

I am so delighted to have achieved a first class honours in an International Masters degree. Following my education journey within South West College I went onto further education as a part-time long distance student. This achievement is probably the highlight.

What advice might you give to current or prospective students considering studying at SWC?

Never give up—your journey is unique, and education is achievable at any age. I left school at 15 due to illness, feeling inferior because I had no qualifications.

However, life has a strange way of working out. Returning to college as a mature student, I took on course after course, even when I hadn’t imagined a career in business. Today, as an entrepreneur and international inspirational keynote speaker, I can honestly say that following your passion transforms your life.

If you love what you do, every day becomes easier, and your career path can evolve in unexpected, rewarding ways. Know what you want to achieve by thinking long term and working backwards to set your goals. Embrace the opportunity that a college course provides—take risks and imagine the possibilities rather than focusing on the negatives. Trust your own instincts, follow your dreams, and remember that the best risk you take might be the one that changes your life completely.
