South West College is delighted to announce that formal planning permission for the development of a new College Campus, on the site of the old Erne hospital, has now been granted. This £24.6 million investment will create a modern, cutting-edge college environment with capacity for 7000 pupils annually.
Malachy McAleer, SWC Director, said;
“This is a fantastic project and one that will be of enormous benefit to students in the South West region and beyond. The proposed building on the site of the old Erne hospital is perfect for the college and a good example of how landmark historic sites can be reimagined for alternative uses and preserved for generations to come”.
The ambitious build plans will see South West College strive to achieve a world first, developing a new level of building standard called PassivHaus Premium. When complete the new campus will be the first non-domestic building to achieve this status globally, ranking it in a league with prestigious buildings such as the Apple Campus 2 in terms of sustainable innovation and design.
Joe Martin, South West College Chairman Governing Body, said;
“This is a major milestone for the College and moves us one step closer to an official opening in September 2019. This announcement is timed to coincide with 10th anniversary of the South West College merger and is further evidence of the College’s commitment to education-led regeneration, providing local students with access to facilities that will raise education and skills levels in the wider community”.
