SWC Supporting the Mineral Processing & Concrete Products Industries to Decarbonise 02 Sept 2026 We were delighted to welcome Pat Cullen MP to South West College to meet with colleagues, local companies, MPANI, InvestNI and Department for Economy officials to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the Mineral Processing and Concrete Products industries as they work towards a more sustainable, low-carbon future. A key focus of discussions was South West College’s plans to bring forward the Decarbonisation, Innovation and Skills for Concrete Centre (DISC), working in partnership with local industry and stakeholders to provide specialist expertise, innovation and skills to support businesses on their decarbonisation journey. The proposed DISC Centre will create opportunities for industry and education to work collaboratively on practical solutions to reduce carbon emissions, develop new technologies and processes, enhance skills and help businesses remain competitive as the sector transitions towards net zero. Pat Cullen MP has been a strong supporter of this work, recognising the importance of supporting local businesses and the wider industry to meet the challenges of industrial decarbonisation. Discussions also highlighted the wider support available to local companies through the €7.6 million PRISM (Colleges Powering Research & Innovation for Advanced Manufacturing) Project, which is helping SMEs develop new and innovative products and processes while tackling decarbonisation challenges across traditionally hard-to-decarbonise sectors.
