The 18th Annual Plaisterers’ Training Awards were held at Plaisterers’ Hall in London. The event was attended by the Lord Mayor, Alderman Lord Moutevans and over 170 other guests. The awards represent the plastering and dry-lining trade, Training Colleges, Independent Training Providers, City Livery Companies. With particular links to organisations actively involved in construction skills training. Daniel McAteer represented South West College; he was nominated by one of his lectures Noel McIntyre, from the Omagh campus.
Daniel, who works in his family business, McAteer Plastering, in Randalstown, was nominated for ‘Student of the Year’, which is a very prestigious award. This award recognises the individual’s excellence in achievement. This can be the best student at the college, personal goals being achieved, personal improvement or outstanding performance in practical work. Daniel received runner up in this award and received an inscribed copy of Millar’s which is the plasterer’s bible and a cheque for £200.
Daniel is a proud member of the family business based in Randalstown, County Antrim in which his grandfather and father still work. He is currently a Level 3 student he has had the opportunity to work on a number of significant projects throughout Ireland including Mount Stewart owned by the National Trust. Daniel has worked in all aspects of the plastering trade but has taken a particular interest in heritage skills and has been keen to learn not only about plastering but also the building and woodwork aspect of restoration.
Noel McIntyre, Daniels training lecture, stated “Daniel is a role model for others in his class; he is always willing to help others. He is a pleasure to work with and is always eager to learn”.
The awards also recognised South West College in the Regional Awards. SWC come runner up in the Harmer Trophy award for Northern Ireland; the Harmer Trophy Award is for large colleges who have achieved top ratings at academic level 3, SWC received a cheque for £500. This was a magnificent achievement for the college and demonstrates the dedication and hard work off all the staff and students.
