Stephanie Lee, a former Higher Education student at our Fairview Campus, completed her high school education and pursued her Higher National Diploma (HND) in Health and Social Care at South West College. Recently, Stephanie visited the college to speak with a group of Further Education students about their next steps in the Health and Social Care field. She also discussed the work that she undertakes in her current position as Deputy Service Manager at Positive Futures Lakeland location. Stephanie always had an interest in the caring profession.

After finishing her A-Levels, she attended South West College for higher education. Stephanie felt that attending college allowed her to take responsibility for her learning, and the learning style there suited her well. "I learned a lot about myself while at South West College. It taught me how to take responsibility for my education and my input into my learning. I believe the college was the perfect setting for me. In school, you were ‘made to go’, but at college, I was in charge of my own outcome. I didn't go to university after school; I got everything I needed here in Enniskillen."

Stephanie also spoke to the group about the potential progression opportunities available within many Health and Social Care settings. Upon completing her studies, she was eager and ready to enter the workforce.

"After completing my HND, I knew that I was ready for the workplace. My work is immensely rewarding, finding solutions for the people we support day to day. I started as a Support Worker, gained experience for managerial positions and over time, became a Senior Support Worker, Team Leader, and now a Deputy Service Manager. I did not pursue a degree after my HND, and it's important to highlight that opportunities for progression really are available to everyone."

When asked if Stephanie had any advice for those considering a career in adult learning disability, she had this to say:

"My career in adult learning disability has changed my life; it's just so rewarding. You go home feeling fulfilled and having made a big difference in a person's life. If you want to enter this field, my advice would be to go for it!"
