From Erasmus student to Higher Level Apprenticeship (HLA) Development Officer, Luca Farkas's journey at South West College (SWC) demonstrates how international opportunities can open the door to a fulfilling and rewarding career.
Originally from Hungary, Luca was studying Economics and Marketing at University of Pécs Faculty of Business and Economics (PTE) in Hungary when she was required to undertake a work placement as part of her degree. With her parents and siblings having already moved to Omagh, the Erasmus programme offered the perfect opportunity to gain valuable industry experience while spending time closer to family.
After contacting South West College's Erasmus Coordinator at the time, Luca secured a placement with the College's Marketing team, an experience that would ultimately influence the direction of her future career.
Reflecting on her first days at South West College, Luca said:
"I was nervous coming from a different country and culture and wondering how I would fit in, but everyone made me feel so welcome. I loved being part of the team and even got to take part in a mini PR tour, which allowed me to see different parts of the country."
The experience left such a lasting impression that, after completing her placement and graduating, Luca found herself wanting to return.
Luca said:"I remember thinking when I left, 'How could I come back?' I just wanted to be part of it again."
A few years later, she did exactly that, joining South West College as a Work Based Learning Administrator. After spending two years in the role, she moved into a Data Analyst position, where she further developed her professional skills and experience.
While she enjoyed the analytical nature of the role, Luca felt something was missing.
"I loved being a Data Analyst, but it was missing the purpose," said Luca.
Following the loss of her grandfather, Luca saw an advertisement for her current position as HLA Development Officer and decided to apply.
Luca said: "I'm a spiritual person, so I took it as a sign from him to go and do what I'd like to do, because life is too short."
Today, Luca is thriving in a role that enables her to support learners while drawing on the knowledge and experience gained throughout her career journey.
Speaking about her role, Luca said:
"My team is extremely supportive, and I get to use all the skills I developed in my previous roles. I'd recommend it because you'll get to work in a supportive environment, with people who accept you for you. You'll get all the help you need; you'll develop your skills and make lifelong connections."
Encouraging others to take advantage of international opportunities at the College, Luca added:
"Going to another country can seem daunting at first, but the skills and experience you gain far outweigh any negatives. You might even fall in love with the country and decide to stay."
