South West College Celebrates Student Success at Annual Awards Ceremonies

19 Jun 2025

South West College (SWC) recently hosted its annual Celebration of Success Awards, recognising the outstanding achievements of Further Education students, apprentices, and Schools Partnership pupils. The ceremonies, held across the Omagh, Dungannon, and Erne campuses, celebrated excellence in academic performance, skills development, and community contribution.

Hundreds of high-achieving learners were honoured, with family, friends, and tutors in attendance to celebrate their accomplishments across a wide range of programmes, including Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 Diplomas. Many of these learners will now progress to higher education at South West College or university, or take the next step into employment.

The celebratory events were hosted by Celine McCartan, Principal and Chief Executive of South West College, and featured a range of inspiring guest speakers. Among them was Barry McElduff, the newly appointed Chair of Fermanagh, and Omagh District Council, who addressed audiences at both the Omagh and Enniskillen campuses.

At the Omagh campus, guest speaker and former SWC student Chris Gilroy, now the successful founder of Health Fit Lab, delivered an inspiring address. Chris shared his personal story, from enrolling on the BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise programme without GCSEs to graduating with First Class Honours and receiving the Student of the Year award. His journey powerfully showcased how education can transform lives and open new opportunities.

Meanwhile, at the Erne campus, guest speaker Darragh McGurn reflected on his decision to pursue his passion for athletic performance. Now coaching both club and county-level players and running a thriving online coaching business, Darragh encouraged students to see education as a launchpad for achieving their ambitions.

Former student Shelley Cowan returned to the Dungannon campus to share her inspiring story of resilience. From facing personal challenges through illness to achieving a degree in Business, Shelley now advocates passionately for people with disabilities. Her powerful message left a lasting impression, encouraging learners to pursue their full potential, no matter the obstacles.

Speaking at each of the events, South West College Principal and Chief Executive, Celine McCartan, congratulated this year’s award recipients:

“To each award recipient, I extend my heartfelt congratulations. Today, we celebrate the best of the best. While some awards recognise academic and skills excellence, others reflect the dedication and commitment you have shown to the College community and your future careers.

Our programmes continue to earn praise from inspectors and evaluating authorities, highlighting how we are meeting the aspirations of the next generation of skilled practitioners and entrepreneurs. I hope you and your guests enjoy this memorable occasion, and I wish you continued success on the next stage of your journey.”
