I was originally recommended to study the VTCT Level 5 Sports Massage Therapy course at South West College by a friend who had previously completed the qualification. They spoke highly of the lecturer based at the Dungannon campus and the depth of real-world clinical experience they brought to the course, which strongly influenced my decision to enrol.
The course at SWC significantly built my confidence when working with clients and taught me how to approach treatments strategically within a clinical setting. The lecturer was exceptional, and I genuinely made some great friends throughout the journey. I am particularly proud to have achieved the VTCT Level 5 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy as a result of completing this course.
Professionally, I currently work as a manager within an engineering business and as a design engineer for a gym equipment manufacturer. The Sports Massage Therapy qualification closely complements my role as a gym equipment designer, as it highlighted clear opportunities within the recovery sector for both gym users and athletes. With the health and wellbeing industry continuing to grow, more people are prioritising recovery, injury prevention, and physical wellbeing. This course allowed me to deepen my understanding of rehabilitation, recovery methods, and injury prevention.
Completing the course at SWC has given me the confidence to plan opening my sports massage business full-time in 2026. I have already completed several CPD courses to support my business and will continue to invest in further learning to better serve my clients and support long-term growth.
I would absolutely recommend SWC to anyone considering a Sports Massage course. The depth of study across both practical techniques and research is excellent. The strong hands-on approach—particularly through open clinics and club visits—provides invaluable real-world experience and helps students build confidence quickly. The flexibility of evening classes is ideal for those working full-time, and having multiple campus locations makes the course extremely accessible.
Balancing a full-time role, a part-time job, home life, and study was challenging at times. However, the support from my employers and family made all the difference, and I would not have completed the course without their encouragement and understanding.
My biggest inspiration comes from my clients. They motivate me to keep learning so I can support them as effectively as possible. Sports massage is not just for athletes—it benefits anyone experiencing pain, tension, or looking to improve their overall wellbeing. Working closely with clients has also helped me identify gaps in the health and wellbeing market, which I hope to explore further in the future.
For anyone considering further or higher education, even if it isn’t directly related to your current role, I would strongly encourage you to go for it. If you have a genuine interest or passion for something, give it a chance—you never know where it might lead.
