Former student Melissa McFarland recently returned to South West College to speak with current students about her journey into Social Work. During her visit, Melissa shared valuable insights into her career path, offering practical advice and inspiration to those considering a future in the field. Melissa began her journey into Social Work by undertaking the Foundation Degree in Science in Health and Social Care initially.

Reflecting on her motivation, Melissa explained:
“I have always had a strong interest in helping others and making a positive difference in people's lives. This inspired me to pursue a career in a caring profession where I can have a meaningful impact every day and support others in achieving better outcomes.”

Following her Foundation Degree, Melissa moved to Dungannon Campus to undertake her Ulster University BSc(Hons) Social Work Degree, citing the small numbers within the class, and the ability to study close to home as key reasons why this was a great choice for her Degree pathway.

Speaking about her time at the college, she said:
“I thoroughly enjoyed my time at South West College while completing the Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care. The support from lecturers was excellent, and I developed both the knowledge and confidence that prepared me well for my career.”

Melissa also highlighted what she enjoys most about her current role:
“What I enjoy most is the opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives. I also value the variety within the role and the chance to work as part of a team to achieve positive outcomes.”

Encouraging students to consider the profession, she added:
“I would encourage anyone thinking about this pathway to give it a go. Social Work can be challenging, but it is incredibly rewarding. Gaining as much practical experience as possible is invaluable, as it helps build confidence and understanding. I would also recommend being open to learning, asking questions, and making the most of the support available from lecturers and colleagues.”

Melissa now works as a Social Worker within the Gateway Team at the Western Health and Social Care Trust (WHSCT).
