Graduate John Chooses the Right Tech Path

Tech enthusiast John Donaghy has graduated with a BSc Hons Degree in Computing Science at South West College (SWC).  John praised the College for helping him gain the relevant education, working experience and certifications needed for career advancement within the rewarding IT sector.

John grew up in Lissan and completed his GCSE’s at St Mary's Grammar, progressing to Saint Pius X College in Magherafelt, where he accomplished his A Levels. He says: “I had based all my chosen subjects on the pursuit of a career in Sport. However, my interests had faded, and I was left with a difficult choice to either pursue University or make a career change and go after my true interest of a career in IT."

John knew he needed to reorient, and with this newfound direction, he confidently rebooted his career at SWC Dungannon Campus, branching into Information Communication Technology (ICT) at Level 3. John thrived personally and professionally, progressing onto a Foundation Degree in ICT. He mastered the general principles and gained the relevant working experience that would enable him to gain employment within a multitude of distinct areas within the IT sector.

However, John's passion and willingness to fine-tune his impressive computing acumen alongside the positive and supportive relationship he had built with his tutors inspired him to take advantage of SWC's locally available BSc Hons Computing Science Top-Up Degree, which is validated by the Open University.

John gained specialist skills in a broad range of key Information Technology (IT) concepts, including coding and web design, while honing his ability to solve problems and creatively implement solutions used readily within the Tech industry.

John said: "I enjoyed the Degree course, which is at the forefront of its field as it combined ultra-modern theory alongside hands-on experience that provided me with the soft skills and practical skills required to help build a fulfilling career within any area of IT.

I would definitely recommend SWC for those aspiring to enter the Tech world as it offers a direct path from Level 2 – Level 6. The tutors are exceptional and genuinely care for their students, which helps you plan and prepare for your future career prosperously. In particular, I would like to thank Sinead McGee for her excellence and ongoing support, which subsequently, I feel, brought out the best in me and my capabilities.

After completing my degree with a 2.1 Honours, I feel that I am in an excellent position to achieve my career aspirations and secure a full-time job within Website Design. However, at this stage in my life, I have seriously considered continuing my professional development by completing a Masters in Computing Science as my time at SWC has made me feel more prepared than ever.”

John Lyons, Mathematics and Computing Lecturer at South West College, said: “The School of Mathematics and Computing have had a breadth of excellent results this year, which is testament to the high quality facilities and the incredible teaching that is available locally. Each and every learner has demonstrated outstanding work ethic, and we are delighted that John's dedication and drive has been rewarded with an excellent grade. He will be an asset to any company."
