Erin is cementing her future with an Apprenticeship in brickwork

03 Feb 2025

Erin Moore from Dromore is proving that University isn’t the only route to a successful career and is keen to share her journey and inspire others to consider the apprenticeship route, especially as Northern Ireland gears up for NI Apprenticeship Week 3rd to 7th February.

While studying for her A Levels at Drumragh Integrated College, Erin was on track for university but realised early on that it wasn’t the best fit for her ambitions. Keen to gain the skills and experience to develop her career in Brickwork, Erin joined South West College (SWC) Omagh campus studying the L2 Apprenticeship in Brickwork, combining hands-on experience with classroom learning.

Reflecting on her journey, Erin said: “I didn’t think about going to university because I was always interested in the trades. I liked the idea of brickwork, so I went on work experience and loved it. I then attended an open evening at the College. It was fantastic, I got to see the facilities and speak to tutors about the options in trades, including brickwork. That’s when I decided to give it a go.”

Now, Erin splits her time, working four days a week on-site with her employer, Greystone, and spending one day each week at SWC. The mix of practical and theoretical learning has proven to be a perfect match for her learning style.

Erin said: “I really enjoy the balance, you’re not just learning in a classroom all the time, and that’s what makes it so enjoyable and engaging.”

As a female pursuing a trade, Erin has found the experience welcoming and supportive. Erin said: “Settling in was no problem at all. College is different from school. I knew a few when I came here, but you soon get to know everyone. It’s like a big community, and as a woman in the trades, I’ve felt completely included and supported from the start.”

Erin’s decision to pursue an apprenticeship is paying off in multiple ways.

Erin said: “I’m so glad I chose an apprenticeship! The facilities are excellent, the tutors are always available to help, and I’m gaining qualifications while earning a wage, without any student debt.”

For anyone considering their options Erin says, “University isn’t the only choice. If you’re interested in a more practical hands-on career an apprenticeship might be for you, so don’t be afraid just go for it. You’ll enjoy it and come out with skills that can take you anywhere in the world.”
