Student Spotlight: Epifania Lara

When Epifania Lara first arrived at South West College to study Business Management, she faced a challenge that many students never experience – beginning her studies with very little English.

Despite the language barrier, Epifania was determined to succeed. With the encouragement and patience of her lecturers, she steadily improved her language skills while growing in confidence both inside and outside the classroom.

"I found the college to be incredibly supportive and welcoming," said Epifania. "The lecturers were always patient and willing to help, which gave me the confidence to improve my English and succeed in my studies."

Throughout her time at SWC, Epifania developed valuable business knowledge while discovering a passion for entrepreneurship. Practical learning experiences, including work placements, helped her strengthen key skills such as communication, teamwork and problem-solving, giving her the confidence to pursue her long-term ambition of starting her own business in Timor-Leste.

Her journey became even more remarkable when she became a mother during her studies. Balancing family responsibilities with college life brought new challenges, but with determination and the continued support of her lecturers, she successfully completed her modules and remained committed to her education.

"My daughter is my biggest motivation," she said. "She encourages me to keep going, work hard and do my best, even when things get challenging."

Looking back, one of the biggest transformations Epifania sees is in her confidence. When she began her Level 3 Business Management course, she found presentations and speaking in front of others intimidating. Through encouragement from her lecturers and regular opportunities to develop these skills, she now feels confident contributing to classroom discussions and presenting her ideas.

Reflecting on her experience, Epifania says South West College has played a significant role in helping her grow academically and personally.

"I am proud of how far I have come," she said. "My journey has shown me that with determination and the right support, I can achieve more than I ever thought possible."

Epifania would wholeheartedly recommend South West College to future students, praising its supportive lecturers, welcoming environment and the opportunities it provides to develop both personally and professionally.

As she looks to the future, Epifania hopes to continue building her knowledge and experience before achieving her dream of launching her own business in Timor-Leste, using the skills she has gained at South West College to create opportunities for herself and her community.
