South West College student Leah Morton from Dungannon has been recognised for her outstanding achievements after being named Student of the Year for her OCN NI Level 3 Diploma in Business Administration Skills at the College's Dungannon campus.
Having spent her early school years in special educational needs provision due to a physical disability, Leah's decision to attend a South West College Open Day marked the beginning of a new chapter in her educational journey. Impressed by the welcoming atmosphere and the encouragement she received from staff, she chose SWC and successfully transitioned into mainstream further education.
Leah began her journey with the OCN NI Level 1 Certificate in Retail Business before progressing to the OCN NI Level 2 Diploma in Business Administration Skills and ultimately completing the OCN NI Level 3 Diploma in Business Administration Skills.
Leah thrived throughout her time at the College, earning an Excellence Award during her Level 1 studies before being named Student of the Year at Level 3 in recognition of her exceptional progress and academic achievement.
Reflecting on her decision to study at South West College, Leah said:
"The thing that attracted me to South West College was how friendly and helpful all the staff were from my very first Open Day. They listened to my needs and gave me expert advice and guidance about my future. Their encouragement helped me develop confidence, resilience and determination, and has had a very positive impact on both my personal and academic growth."
Throughout her studies, Leah credits the College's supportive learning environment, dedicated tutors and valuable work placement opportunities with helping her develop the practical skills and confidence needed for a career in the business sector. She described the guidance and encouragement she received from staff as instrumental in helping her achieve her goals.
Leah said:
"My course has helped me in many ways, but one of the highlights was securing business administration work placements during both years of my studies. I loved the experience and it has made me eager to begin my search for a role in business administration where I can continue to develop professionally and gain further experience."
Leah also developed effective strategies to manage her workload, breaking larger assignments into manageable tasks and building the resilience needed to overcome challenges throughout her studies.
Encouraging others to consider South West College, Leah added:

There is something for everyone, and my courses have given me valuable insight into the world of business administration, practical experience and the self-belief needed to carry my skills into the workplace.
