School may be out for summer but the learning didn’t stop for a group of curious campers who attended the Creative Computing Summer Camp at the South West College STEM Centre, 27th – 31st July.
The young boys and girls aged between 10-14 years took part in a wide range of hands-on workshops led by a team of dedicated STEM experts, designed to develop skills in programming, gaming, video photography, movie making, 3D modelling and virtual reality.
Speaking about the camp, Shirley Patterson (STEM Centre Co-ordinator) said:
“The Creative Computing Summer Camp has been introduced to provide a range of taster activities to young people, with the aim of sparking an interest in computing that will last a lifetime. Each workshop has been designed to support the next generation to engage with digital technologies and to introduce them to the skills to pursue new career paths.”
Shirley added: “We have been delighted with the participation of both boys and girls in the camp and their feedback has been really positive, with much demand for similar events in the near future.”
The schedule of interactive workshops included ‘The Graphic Hub’, which allowed the campers to learn essential skills in Adobe Photoshop to create graphic artwork for digital use; ‘Digital Fabrication’, which highlighted the processes used in industry such as laser cutting, CNC machining, 3D scanning and printing, along with the ‘Script to screen’ workshop, which saw the young people explore the craft of filmmaking to create their very own production in the STEM Centre’s multimedia studio!
