Students from South West College (SWC) and local schools in Fermanagh had the opportunity to explore the world of biomedical science recently as the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) Learning Lab visited the College's Erne Campus as part of a ten-day Northern Ireland roadshow.

The IBMS Learning Lab, a mobile public engagement facility, travels across the UK raising awareness of the vital role biomedical scientists play in healthcare while inspiring the next generation to consider careers in laboratory science. During its visit to SWC, students participated in a range of interactive activities designed to bring biomedical science to life.

Working alongside volunteers from the Western Health and Social Care Trust, participants gained hands-on experience in a variety of laboratory techniques, including DNA modelling, micropipetting, microscopy and virtual reality technology, allowing them to explore cells and biological processes in an engaging and immersive way.

The roadshow highlighted how biomedical scientists contribute to patient care through disease diagnosis, condition monitoring and treatment support, helping to shine a light on a profession that often works behind the scenes but plays a critical role within healthcare services.

Jennifer Brown, Lecturer for South West College, said:

"We were delighted to welcome the IBMS Learning Lab to our Erne Campus and provide students with this fantastic opportunity to engage with biomedical science in a practical and interactive way. Events like this help young people gain a greater understanding of the important contribution biomedical scientists make to healthcare while highlighting the exciting range of career opportunities available within the sector.

“The hands-on activities encouraged students to explore science beyond the classroom and provided valuable insight into the skills and technologies used by healthcare professionals every day."

As part of the Northern Ireland tour, the Learning Lab visited the Precision Diagnostic Laboratory at Altnagelvin Hospital and a careers event at the Foyle Arena, showcasing healthcare innovation and career opportunities in healthcare science.

The roadshow aims to inspire future scientists while increasing public understanding of the essential work taking place in hospital laboratories across Northern Ireland.
